The recorder is the part of a CCTV system that people under-buy and then regret. A DVR records from analogue cameras over coax; an NVR records from IP cameras over the network. Channel count should be chosen with room to grow — an 8-channel recorder for a 4-camera install costs a little more now and saves replacing the whole unit when two more cameras go up.
